When they got back home, Luke put the girls on researching the names on the list of clowns. Only he could get into the police database, but the girls could get a general sense of the men behind the makeup. He’d given them the beginnings of a profile to look for based on what they knew and hoped one of them might fit.

Once the girls were hard at work in the dining room, Luke retreated to his office on the second floor to get to work. He hadn’t been at his desk for five minutes before a knock brought his attention to the door.

“Sorry to disturb you.”

“You’re not disturbing me, sweetheart. I just started. Come in and talk to me.” Misty sat on the end of the bed behind Luke’s desk and he spun around in his swivel chair to face her. “What’s up?”

“I’m going to Thibodaux to deal with Silla.”

“Misty, no. We talked about this. I can’t go with you right now, I’m too busy, and you can’t go alone. I don’t want you near her without support.”

Misty’s gaze never wavered. “I’m going tomorrow, and I’ll take Rufin, Michele, Ben, and Rowanne with me. Rufin needs a change and I can use him in the bayou. Michele has the frost power I might need if things go sideways. I’ve thought this through. I’m going.”

Luke let out a long, suffering sigh. “I’ve never forbidden you to do anything. That would be pointless, but I’m appealing to your sensible side and asking you not to go without me.”

Misty stood up with a determined look on her face. “I mean you no offense, Luke, but in a situation between two battling witches, you’re not the backup I need. You stay here and do what you do. I’m packing for the trip and I’ll do what I need to do.”

Color rose in Luke’s face as he turned to watch her leave. “Close the door on your way out.”
